Buprenorphine Starts for Patients Using Fentanyl

Course Description

This on-demand course will review how transitioning patients from fentanyl to buprenorphine is absolutely possible and can be done even in the most austere environments. When fentanyl entered the illicit drug market, we saw an immediate increase in both non-fatal and fatal overdoses. We responded, as we could, to this acute threat with education, naloxone distribution, and other outreach efforts. As time has passed and we have more experience with patients who use fentanyl regularly, we are learning that we need to address this specific substance use disorder differently than we addressed use disorders involving other, less potent, opioids.

At the conclusion of the on-demand course, participants will be able to:

1. Identify two (2) patient characteristics that indicate a person is a good candidate for MOUD with buprenorphine.
2. Specify three (3) considerations to initiate buprenorphine for patients with fentanyl use disorder.
3. Propose three (3) ways to address medication needs after initiation of treatment with buprenorphine.
