Youth and MAT: A Bridge to Healthier California Youth

Course Description

Adolescents and young adults are experiencing fast-growing rates of opioid overdose and hospitalization, yet have the lowest rates of access to treatment. According to the National Institute for Drug Abuse, substance use during adolescence can result in negative consequences, including involvement with the criminal justice system, poor school performance, and health and mental health issues. The Youth Opioid Response (YOR) California project envisions a California in which youth with opioid and stimulant disorders can access a continuum of effective youth-specific prevention, early intervention, treatment, and recovery services. With this goal in mind, YOR California is working with local communities, service providers, and other stakeholders to prevent and reduce opioid and stimulant misuse, use disorders, and overdose deaths among youth (ages 12-24).

This 1-hour on-demand course presented by the YOR California Team will focus on best practices for providing Medication for Addiction Treatment (MAT) to youth with opioid use disorder (OUD). In addition, the presentation will address how to increase knowledge about MAT in the community, create guidance to develop regional systems of care, and work towards expanding the capacity of California communities to provide MAT to youth ages 12-24.

Launch Date: August 30, 2022

At the conclusion of the on-demand course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recall at least two (2) aspects of adolescent brain development related to youth substance use disorder
  2. Specify at least three (3) considerations when obtaining consent for MAT with adolescents.
  3. Identify at least two (2) ways to make a treatment program more youth-friendly.
  4. Propose at least one (1) new method of engagement for local organizations and youth treatment.
