Providing Culturally Responsive Substance Use Disorder Treatment in Indigenous Communities

Course Description

People from indigenous cultures are more likely to experience negative consequences of alcohol and drug use, including developing a substance use disorder, living through trauma, and dying from overdose. American Indian and Alaska Native people benefit from culturally relevant approaches to prevention, treatment, and recovery for substance use disorders. This on-demand training for California-based Tribal and Urban Indian health care providers will feature clinical strategies to infuse indigenous culture into evidence-based practice. Attendees will learn approaches to integrate culturally responsive evaluation and program development, with an emphasis on community engagement, including families, children, and elders. A motivational interviewing intervention developed specifically for Native American youth who use alcohol or drugs will be highlighted, as well.

Launch Date: January 3, 2022

At the conclusion of the on-demand course, participants will be able to:

1. Explain three (3) approaches to increase the culturally-competent evaluation in substance use treatment.
2. Identify two (2) examples of culturally adapted behavioral interventions for substance use disorder.
3. Specify three (3) cultural practices integrated into the MICUNAY intervention for urban AI/AN adolescents.
4. Propose two (2) specific cultural adaptations to apply in your work setting.
