Opioid Screening in Youth: Foundations for an Effective Screening Process
Course Description
This on-demand course will allow learners to explore the role of opioid screening in adolescents, emphasizing that its effectiveness hinges on excellent confidentiality practices and effective interventions. Learners will understand the primary reasons that screening is needed and learn about the opioids that predominantly lead to youth overdoses. Learners will also familiarize themselves with the stances of various professional bodies on adolescent screening and learn about the tools validated for detecting opioid use in youth. This course provides strong foundational knowledge for future engaging discussions on opioid use in youth.

At the conclusion on the on-demand course, participants will be able to:
- Identify three (3) reasons underscoring the importance of screening youth for opioid use and recognize the primary opioid contribution to adolescent overdose deaths.
- Distinguish between two (2) professional organizations that recommend screening in adolescents, as well as two (2) organizations that have found inconclusive evidence supporting such screenings.
- Propose three (3) critical factors essential for establishing an effective youth screening process.
- Describe three (3) validated screening tools specifically designed for detecting opioid use in youth.

How to receive a CE/CME Certificate:

The California Board of Registered Nursing recognizes that Continuing Medical Education (CME) is acceptable for meeting RN continuing education requirements as long as the course is certified for AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM (rn.ca.gov). Nurses will receive a Certificate of Participation following this activity that may be used for license renewal.
Continuing medical education will be awarded within 6-8 weeks following completion of the on-demand course.

The on-demand course meets the qualifications for the provision of one (1.0) continuing education credit/contact hour (CE/CEH). UCLA Integrated Substance Abuse Programs (ISAP) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. UCLA ISAP maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
UCLA ISAP is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs (Provider #64812). UCLA ISAP maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. Course meets the qualifications for one (1.0) hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
